Batteries

Batteries and rechargeable batteries are an essential part of everyday life. UFH provides collection and recycling services, enabling valuable raw materials to be recovered and returned to the circular economy.

This process is now considered one of the key pillars of environmentally responsible waste management.

The EU Batteries Regulation (EU-BatterienVO) and its national implementing regulations apply to all types of batteries and rechargeable batteries, regardless of their shape, weight or intended use – including batteries permanently integrated into electrical and electronic equipment.

Portable batteries and rechargeable batteries

We collect and dispose of portable batteries of general use used in everyday household applications (button cells, AAA, AA, etc.). Modern lithium batteries, such as those used in mobile phones and laptops are also classified as portable batteries, provided they are encapsulated and weigh no more than 5 kg.

Light means of transport batteries

Since the entry into force of the EU Batteries Regulation, a separate category has been established for “Light Means of Transport (LMT) batteries”. Previously classified as portable batteries, these batteries have been subject to separate reporting since 2026.

This category includes sealed batteries weighing up to 25 kg. They are designed to power wheeled vehicles and are commonly used in e-bikes, electric scooters and golf trolleys.

Industrial batteries

Industrial batteries are used in a wide range of sizes and cell chemistries. The range extends from residential applications, such as home energy storage systems for photovoltaic installations, to commercial solutions, including large-scale containerised energy storage systems (BESS).

Electric vehicle batteries

Electric vehicle batteries are used in electric and hybrid vehicles. They include high-capacity batteries for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) as well as smaller battery systems used in various hybrid models.

Starting, lighting and ignition batteries

SLI batteries (formerly referred to as vehicle batteries) are specifically designed to supply electrical energy for starting, lighting and ignition systems. They often also serve auxiliary or backup purposes.

Proper disposal

Due to the hazardous substances they contain, end-of-life batteries must never be disposed of with residual waste. Only by returning through appropriate collection channels valuable raw materials can be recovered: Today, approximately 50 % of all portable batteries placed on the Austrian market each year are collected and recovered (EAK-Activity Report, 2024).

The EU Batteries Regulation and its national implementing legislation apply to all companies that place batteries, or (rechargeable) batteries integrated into electric and electronic equipment, on the Austrian market for the first time: Austrian producers, importers and distributors sourcing products directly from abroad, as well as all companies established outside Austria that sell directly to private or commercial end users in Austria.

To comply with these obligations, the appointment of an authorised representative is mandatory. UFH can reliably assume this role on your behalf.
